Simon Richardson Update (24/08/11)

It's a week since Simon crash.  He remains critical but stable on the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Wales.

Speaking with Amanda his wife this morning, she said that although he still remains sedated, he is a bit more alert  and she felt he looks better in himself, which is positive to hear.  Amanda is travelling around one hundred miles a day, back and forth from the hospital to be at her husbands side.

Yesterday, Simon underwent some investigative surgery around his stomach, surgeons found a small hole which had been leaking fluid, which they have now repaired.  Simon continues to receive breathing assistance due to the damage to his lung.  He is unlikely to be moved from the high dependency ward until he is able to breathe unassisted.

Support for the "ride for #SIMONSTRONG" campaign is now in full throw with momentum building overnight.  Cyclists are being encourged to print out the above poster before their ride to work, club ride or social rides over the next week in support of Simon and road safety for cyclists generally.

The #SIMONSTRONG tribute bike being prepared by Performance Race Art in South Wales is expected to be finishd by the end of next week, featuring the names of 685 people who have shown support via Twitter for Simon.  Names include former Tour de France Stage Winner and Paris-Roubaix Winner - Magnus Backstedt; Comedian - Jack Dee; 11 x Paralympic medalist Baroness Grey-Thompson and multiple Australian World track champion - Anna Meares.

Note to Press; Simon Richardson is a double-gold Paralympic cyclist.  On the track in Bejing 2008 he won the LC3/4 1km time trial and 3km individual pursuit. He also claimed a silver in the road time trial and assisted team mate Darren Kenny to victory in the road race.  Further details can be found on his Wikipedia page.

  1. HDU is 'progress' which is fantastic to hear. I know we can't actually *do* anything that will help Simon in his recovery, I hope that Simon and Amanda and everyone close to them is gaining strength from the support, thoughts and prayers of so many people.
